Located just southeast of Phoenix, the 76 square mile city of Gilbert has a rural charm, thanks to its agricultural beginnings. Gilbert is primarily a suburban community, and features dozens of distinct neighborhoods and subdivisions such as Ashland Ranch, Breckenridge, Madera Park, Circle G, Neely Farms, San Tan, Power Ranch and Morrison Ranch.
Gilbert is served primarily by Gilbert Public Schools, with a few areas served by Mesa Public Schools, Chandler Unified School District and the Higley Unified School District.
Outdoor lovers enjoy the multi-acre Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, with 4.5 miles of walking trails, as well as abundant bird life and fishing. Two more popular parks are the Freestone District Park and Crossroads Park. Golf courses include the Western Skies Golf Club, Greenfield Lakes Golf Club, Trilogy Golf Course at Power Ranch, and Seville Golf and Country Club.
Gilbert also is home to several holiday events such as a Halloween carnival as well as an old-fashioned 4th of July celebration. There are a few weekly farmer’s markets, served by nearby farms, as well as a bi-weekly art walk October through March. Major shopping areas include the San Tan Village open-air mall and the shops at the Gilbert Town Square.
Gilbert is served by one major freeway, the Loop 202. Gilbert is a twenty-five-mile drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, but is closer to the smaller Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport.
